Gender Equality has been the buzzword these days and anyone looking for instant stardom for a social cause starts enchanting this mantra like a parrot that I am working to achieve Gender Equality and the society also, starts appreciating it without actually understanding either the meaning of Gender Equality or the need for it to exist. As a de-facto standard, Gender Equality speaks of equality of rights for women. But which rights? Are they really unequal? Do men have their share of rights? And most importantly, are the rights talked of being really distributed equally? Let us take a potshot at it, since most of the so called self-styled "Gender Equality" rights activists aka the "Women rights activists", never introspect their activism on these lines. Women pay lower taxes than men at the same salary level. Why is Gender Equality not applied here? When a wife commits suicide within seven years of marriage, the entire family is whisked away behind bars without any trial or investigation and a de-facto case of dowry death under Section 304B of the IPC is registered. However, when a husband commits suicide, either the suicide is never reported or registered under Section 174 of the CrPC and no arrest is made, neither any case is registered against wife and in-laws? Even in rarest of the rare cases if the case gets registered also, it's after due deliberation and efforts involving NGOs and still the wife is very rarely arrested. Why is Gender Equality not applied here? There is a very dismal representation of women in the armed forces and defenses. Why is Gender Equality not applied here? Domestic Violence is one area where there is stark gender inequality. International studies by the likes of Murray Strauss have proved beyond reasonable doubt that both men and women are equally likely to be victims of Domestic Violence, yet men in India are not protected under the Domestic Violence Act. Why is Gender Equality not applied here? Similarly men are equal victims of rape, sexual harassment and workplace harassment, but there is no proposal/provision to protect them. Why is Gender Equality not applied here? And now, I will talk of one area where the entire concept of Gender Equality has been skewed totally. This pertains to Dowry. While a husband demanding money from wife, in relation to marriage is termed as Dowry, the reverse is not true in practical terms. Wife can demand money from husband either in the form of alimony or extortion via Legal Terrorism and the same is not treated as Dowry. Why is Gender Equality not applied here? Taking it further, the very word "Dowry" is a misnomer. The daughter's rights in parental/ancestral property is passed off as dowry and there is Gender Inequality between brothers and sisters, however, it the husband of the daughter who pays the price of the inequality. Why is Gender Inequality in one home addressed in another home? Lastly when we talk of Gender Equality, it has to be in terms of both rights and responsibilities. Gender Equality does not mean giving rights to one gender (female) and responsibilities to the other gender (male), there has to be an equitable distribution of both equally amongst the genders.
