Maruti Suzuki SX4 ad says, "Men Are Back", but where are they to be seen? Aren't they slowly becoming an extinct species? For the coward and subdued non-females that are roaming around here getting hit by a woman every now and then can't be called for men for sure. The Men who were considered the symbol of power, strength and valor, are now getting beaten everywhere, socially, legally, morally albeit more from their own brethren.

One of the social constructs where they are hit the most is marriage and that is because of the way the current structure of marriage is poised. It gives men (read husbands) only responsibilities and women (read wives) only rights. As a result of this imbalance, wives have a lot of choices in marriage like whether they want to continue the marriage or not, whether they want to stay with the in-laws or not, whether they want to work or not, whether they want to serve their duties or not and so on and so forth. However, husbands do not have this luxury, as they still need to carry on with the traditional role of a protector and provider and whether they likes their wives or not, they cannot take divorce at will without shelling off a big alimony in addition to fighting false cases of dowry harassment and domestic violence. Men face abuse to such an extent that every year over 57000 of them are committing suicides with the rate increasing four times the rate they are born, and still other men are sleeping and doing nothing for their fast vanishing Diaspora. And worst is, that they are not even fighting for their rights; either they pay off their estranged wives to escape legal and social harassment or commit suicide. Both of which are cowardly and non-manly manifestations of escapist behavior. Men have to learn to fight for their rights.

They simply should not be taking the abuse lying down thinking that if they fight, they will be considered bad. It's because they do not fight and the society knows this, that they are taken for granted, denied their basic rights and women are given concessions after concessions at the cost of men. And this is why, the phrase "Men Are Back" seems a misfit.

A handful of men have taken cudgels against the age old mindset of escapism of men and are fighting tooth and nail for their rights. And the question that they are confronted with is, "Do you think your actions are setting precedents?" And the answer that they give is, "If it does not set a precedent, MEN ARE MEN NO MORE.

Sneak A Peek

Men’s Rights – Perspiration or Inspiration?

As I think about the today's theme - it reminds me of Thomas Edison, the man who invented the electric bulb. He had made a famous statement "Things are 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration"

Same applies to men's rights movement as well. It is a matter of constant awareness campaign and hitting at our opponents and proponents of male abuse. Contrary to popular belief, it is 3 times easier to abuse a male than a female because males have no support structure and male abuse is accepted by the society as social service.

Follow Yourself; Not Tradition

As I have repeatedly mentioned in my articles that cultures have deceived men, acting as vultures. Men have been used as the FREE ATM MACHINE, the UNPAID BODYGUARD, the de-facto PROTECTOR and PROVIDER, etc. by cultures and in the process have been reduced to disposable entities. Their abuse is considered a social service now.

And men, the way they are, are in a great way responsible for this. They rarely challenge or question conventions, traditions, histrionics and stereotypes thrust upon them. They do not feel the need to fight for their rights - only a handful of them are doing though scores are getting victimized. They do not demand for their space in the society and accept things as offered to them.

To this effect, today I take the example of Skandagupta - the great emperor of India. His stepmother has him sent to Ujjain so that her son can be made the emperor. He obeys her. But then the Huns attack India under the leadership of Attila the Hun. The army of Skandagupta calls him back as they needed his expertise.
