Protectors’ Shield Unprotected PDF Print E-mail

Being physically stronger and egoistically superior than women, men have self-earned the title of the Protector for women, unanimously in almost all cultures. And at times, this protection syndrome has been self-imposed or culture-imposed.

In earlier times, young boys were sent to wars to die, so that the country land can be protected. And the country land was made safe so that the women could prosper and produce babies. Being baby producing machines, women were extremely valuable to cultures while men were disposable because cultures simply did not afford to lose wombs vis-à-vis penises because even half the number of penises would have achieved the same result, more and more children for cultures to flourish.

Such an environment bestowed de-facto respect to women but made it performance oriented for men and the general euphoria was set that "Men need to protect women come what may". This even reflected in a recent judgment by Chennai High Court which observed that in a case of maintenance, a husband has to earn for his wife and children, no matter what the circumstances are. Such statements tell us an important hidden attitude and that being, The Man, the Protector has to form a shield around the women in his life however his own shield will remain unprotected. While the counter argument to this may stand like this, that if the protector is protected, how will he protect? It must also be borne in mind that there can be weak protectors, and there can be times when the protector himself might just need protection and that Men too are human beings and not superhumans.

Ironically such an attitude comes from men themselves as the judiciary is highly male-dominated with a miniscule percentage of women judges. And this male dominated judiciary views the women as victims (always and under all circumstances), thus they only deliver relief to such women (victims) and never justice. In  this process, however, the judiciary fails to notice that the protectors' shield (which is unprotected), is scathed with attacks beyond the protector's capability to resist or combat, leading to double the number of married men committing suicides than married women.

Even the case of a jobless man wiping out his entire family before committing suicide in order to avoid the daily insults by his wife and children over his inability to earn, tells us  how deep the psychology of men as the Protector has gone in, that a man has no scope to be a failure and if he's one then the society does not mind losing an entire family. And such pervert thoughts of denying protection to the protector's shield are emboldened with such sickening judgments by the highly patriarchal and conservative judiciary as the one highlighted above.

This article is not meant to discuss on solutions to the problem raised. It is intended to raise the issue here and make the readers think over it so that our future generations are not doomed to go through the same fate as the current one is going through.

Men’s Rights – Perspiration or Inspiration?

As I think about the today's theme - it reminds me of Thomas Edison, the man who invented the electric bulb. He had made a famous statement "Things are 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration"

Same applies to men's rights movement as well. It is a matter of constant awareness campaign and hitting at our opponents and proponents of male abuse. Contrary to popular belief, it is 3 times easier to abuse a male than a female because males have no support structure and male abuse is accepted by the society as social service.

Follow Yourself; Not Tradition

As I have repeatedly mentioned in my articles that cultures have deceived men, acting as vultures. Men have been used as the FREE ATM MACHINE, the UNPAID BODYGUARD, the de-facto PROTECTOR and PROVIDER, etc. by cultures and in the process have been reduced to disposable entities. Their abuse is considered a social service now.

And men, the way they are, are in a great way responsible for this. They rarely challenge or question conventions, traditions, histrionics and stereotypes thrust upon them. They do not feel the need to fight for their rights - only a handful of them are doing though scores are getting victimized. They do not demand for their space in the society and accept things as offered to them.

To this effect, today I take the example of Skandagupta - the great emperor of India. His stepmother has him sent to Ujjain so that her son can be made the emperor. He obeys her. But then the Huns attack India under the leadership of Attila the Hun. The army of Skandagupta calls him back as they needed his expertise.
