Weird as it may sound, but it is a truth as the old adage goes, "Truth is stranger than fiction". Being a member of a prominent men's rights organization, I can re-iterate that it is a truth. Not only is Domestic Violence against Men, a truth but also the fact that Domestic Violence against men being acceptable as a social norm is also a truth. Let me tell you a short story. Deepak is a hardworking and sincere person. But his job demanded a lot out of him. And unprecedented work schedules often interrupted his pre-planned meetings with Shalini who was his girlfriend and well aware of the nature of Deepak's work. It again happened one fine day. Deepak was supposed to pick up Shalini but due to some urgent work, he could not do so. When they met later, Shalini was visibly upset. Deepak understood it and apologized for not being able to make up to the meeting. Shalini understood it, but just because Deepak was being nice to her, she insisted on him cajoling her to enlighten her mood. Deepak tried his best, but she was not getting entertained. Despite Deepak's unwillingness and inability, she insisted on him singing a song to woo her. He started singing. He was visibly uncomfortable and struggling to sing, while she was giggling and enjoying the torture Deepak was going through only because he had an unpredictable work routine and Shalini had decided to punish him for this. Ironically, it was his nature of work only that had drawn Shalini closer to Deepak. Now let us imagine this scenario the other way round with roles swapped. Deepak is upset with Shalini for no fault of hers and yet forcing her to cajole him and she trying her level best to do so and at the same time enjoying the entire thing. Does that not sound like man committing domestic violence on woman? Instead of understanding her problems and pain he is penalizing her for no fault of hers. But then what was the woman doing? Was she not doing the same thing? And by the way what Deepak underwent is not a one off story. This is what 99.99% of men undergo as they are supposed to ‘understand' their women and act as per their whims and fancies even if it tantamount to their torture. Such behavioral patterns have led to the general notion that Domestic Violence against Men has become an accepted social norm. And this is the reason, whenever men's rights activists start this issue they are treated in a lukewarm manner. Because Domestic Violence against Men is accepted by the society as a social norm and killing men is considered as a social service since continuous awareness about skyrocketing and abysmally high suicides rates of men (especially married men) fails to waken up the society and other fellow men to fight for men's rights. Looks like the time has come wherein the entire base of the society is calling for a change and that too a drastic one.
