Vimochana, a women's organization conducted a program called Daughters of Fire to create awareness about women facing dowry harassment and domestic violence. The program lasted two days and got wide media coverage. One must have thought that having so many stringent laws to protect women, which defy cardinal principles of natural justice, the incidences of violence against women must have been alarmingly high. For two days the newspapers carried massive coverage of the event with various eminent personalities like Mallika Sarabhai and retired judges expressing their opinions over dowry laws and domestic violence laws and the need to strengthen them. This again gave a hint to the possibly massive number of women facing the problem. Moreover, Vimochana had announced the program 2 months back; which means it was preparing for the program since months as celebrities participated in it from places far and wide. Again I thought, "Daughters of fire", the program would give me an idea of the volume of abuse on women. However, I was shocked to find that they had only 25 victims. After months of preparation and media propaganda, the women organizations could ‘gather' only 25 victims of dowry abuse! Moreover, the volley of anti-male laws to protect women would have definitely created an expectation of having a high number of ‘true victims' reporting, not greedy women dropping crocodile tears to extort men by filing false allegations and contributing to the growing number of dowry and domestic violence cases. But only 25! Let us now take a look at the number of male victims - who are routinely ignored by the government. Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF) - a non funded men's rights organization - routinely conducts weekly counseling meetings in Bangalore for male victims of either domestic violence/dowry harassment or a victim of false allegations of the same from their wives. And the number of male victims that attend the meeting every week is a whopping 60. Moreover, these victims approach SIFF on their own, not like Vimochana, who does months of efforts to ‘gather' Daughters of Fire for whom there is one Union Ministry, one National Commission, 3300 odd externally funded NGOs, and 7200 crores of allocated budgets. On the other hand, SIFF - which supports the victims completely on its own, is approached by number of male victims whom I prefer to call Sons of Misfortune who are living in the society tolerating the abuse without any support structure. Moreover, if one gives a look to the suicide statistics as explained in Domestic Violence Claims 156,000 husbands and other figures of victimization of men as explained in Indian Men - An Epitome of Sacrifices, it clearly elucidates the painful lives men live in the society and enunciates the need for a National Commission for Men and Ministry of Men's Welfare and allocation of budget for Men's Welfare. I wonder who needs more attention and protection - Daughters of Fire or Sons of Misfortune.
