Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in India since ages and is a festival of great prominence. It is a festival wherein a sister ties Rakhi thread on her brother's wrist who in turn promises to protect her. The spirit of the festival gels very well with the chivalrous image of the male where Protection is of prime importance and an identifying trait of the male gender.
But as we have seen in Protectors' Shield Unprotected, the protector's image is working against men and denies protection to men. In fact, it is the same role of a Protector, a Provider and that of a KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR that allows the abuse of men to go on. Men suffer in silence and because of the protector's image; they are hesitant to seek protection from their mothers and sisters.
However, today men's condition is highly deplorable as shown below:
- As per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in the year 2005, more than 22,64,000 crimes have been registered against men (which is 92.8% of total registered crimes), while crime against women is 1,55,000 approximately (which is 6.38% of total registered crimes) and yet the media never found it worth enough to create awareness about this. A really pathetic and callous approach. Original source here. It's just a matter of question as to whose life is in more danger in India, Men or Women? In fact as per the murder rates of USA and India, Indian women are 2 times safer than women in USA despite the presence of so called Dowry Deaths in India.
- As per suicide statistics provided by National Crime Records Bureau, for the years 2005 and 2006, close to 52,483 and 55,452 married men, respectively, have committed suicide as opposed to 28,188 and 29,869 married women. Yet whenever a married woman dies due to any reason, be it accident, illness or commits suicide due to any reason unknown, it is converted into dowry death and yet such large scale suicides by men are not even noticed let alone imparting justice to them. Can the Govt. and the media answer as to why such apathy meted out to men?
Above data is only the tip of iceberg. Abuse of men is way too chronic and deep rooted but because the society views them as protectors and expects protection from them, their abuse goes either unreported or at best unaddressed and leaves the society unperplexed.
Its time men realize that they can no longer carry on in the role of the PROTECTOR especially when it comes to protection from their wives. And this year the Raksha Bandhan is tomorrow i.e. the 5th of August 2009, men should tie Rakhi to their sisters seeking protection from their wives.
Unless men do not shun the traditional role and create new realities, their abuse is going to rise only. Existing realities have nothing to offer to men. Sisters tying Rakhi to their brothers is an existing reality and expects protection from men. Its time men reverse this.
