PRESS RELEASE

Sub: NCFM, Bangalore celebrates International Men’s Day on 19th November 2010

About NCFM:

The National Coalition for Men (NCFM) is a nonprofit educational organization that raises awareness about the ways sex discrimination affects men and boys. Operating since 1977, NCFM is the oldest U.S. based men’s rights group. NCFM has recently launched its Bangalore chapter and is proud to announce the celebration of International Men’s Day on the 19th of November, 2010.

About International Men’s Day:

International Men's Day (IMD) was started by Dr. Jeremy Teelucksing, on November 19th 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago (West Indies) and was supported by the United Nations. The event received wide support from men's groups in USA, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. Indian men’s rights activists celebrated the same for the first time in India on 19th November 2007. Since then, it has been celebrated every year thereafter.

Why International Men’s Day:

International Men’s Day was started and has been continued to be celebrated with 3 Key objectives in mind:

  1. 1. Promoting positive male role models.
  2. 2. Highlighting the contributions and sacrifices that men have been making for the past several millennia to improve living conditions.
  3. 3. Creating awareness about the issues men face and the sex discrimination against them.

This year, reportedly, 40 countries have joined the bandwagon for celebrating International Men’s Day on November 19, 2010. India, being one of them along with US, UK, Australia, Croatia, China, to name a few.

In India, men’s rights activists in various cities like Bangalore, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, etc. are celebrating IMD via various means.

National Coalition for Men, Bangalore in association with Acoustics For You – Sound Opinions, the branded customized car audio portal, is organizing a fun event at the Forum Value Mall, Whitefield with the theme – “Men are Emotional Beings”.

Save Indian Family Foundation, Nagpur is organizing a bike rally and will submit memorandum in the High Court about discrimination against men and fathers.

Hyderabad and Chennai are organizing mass gatherings and awareness sessions to highlight positive male role models and discriminations against men.

Hridaya in Kolkata is organizing a public rally to create awareness about IMD.

Through these events, men’s rights activists from various organizations fighting for men intend to sensitize the society about the vulnerable male who is more often than not deprived of his due right of the “Right to Peaceful Existence” with statements like “It’s a man’s world” and “Every day is a man’s day.”

While, as men take the most of responsibilities and undertake the most risky, dangerous and menial jobs, it may be a man’s day every day but every day is not celebrated. Celebration happens only on one day and that’s the International Men’s Day – November 19 2010.

Let’s celebrate the men in our lives for one day.

Thanks and Regards

India Liaison Officer National Coalition For Men, Bangalore

Sneak A Peek

Men’s Rights – Perspiration or Inspiration?

As I think about the today's theme - it reminds me of Thomas Edison, the man who invented the electric bulb. He had made a famous statement "Things are 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration"

Same applies to men's rights movement as well. It is a matter of constant awareness campaign and hitting at our opponents and proponents of male abuse. Contrary to popular belief, it is 3 times easier to abuse a male than a female because males have no support structure and male abuse is accepted by the society as social service.

Follow Yourself; Not Tradition

As I have repeatedly mentioned in my articles that cultures have deceived men, acting as vultures. Men have been used as the FREE ATM MACHINE, the UNPAID BODYGUARD, the de-facto PROTECTOR and PROVIDER, etc. by cultures and in the process have been reduced to disposable entities. Their abuse is considered a social service now.

And men, the way they are, are in a great way responsible for this. They rarely challenge or question conventions, traditions, histrionics and stereotypes thrust upon them. They do not feel the need to fight for their rights - only a handful of them are doing though scores are getting victimized. They do not demand for their space in the society and accept things as offered to them.

To this effect, today I take the example of Skandagupta - the great emperor of India. His stepmother has him sent to Ujjain so that her son can be made the emperor. He obeys her. But then the Huns attack India under the leadership of Attila the Hun. The army of Skandagupta calls him back as they needed his expertise.
