Is marriage a life-threat to men? PDF Print E-mail

Govt of India being a socialist secular democratic republic, literally does nothing for unemployed or disabled. In paper there might be some relief funds but in practise most of those in need do not get anything. If by-chance some of them get it, that wont be enough for a couple of days meals. Then you might think how how these 1.13 billion people survive? Over 20% of them are below poverty-line; they are out even from statistics and no one cares. This article is about the rest of them.

Majority of the Indian families rely on men, the bread winner, for existence. It is quite usual that 4 to 10 people living with one man's income. It could be 4 fully dependants and 6 partly dependants or something pretty close to that. Even in nuclear families the story is not so different as there will be fully/partly dependants somewhere outside. Men consider this as their moral duty for ages and has been fulfilling it with utmost loyalty. They also contribute to the government in various forms of taxes for the upliftment or empowerment of women by giving various provisions like reservations, reduced or no taxes, widow pension etc. On top of that the State also violates the fundamental rights to equality and put men at gun-point to support women either in marriage or after divorce.
One might ask whether or not the wife be happy to know that they are getting supported just because their husband wants to avoid a criminal case (CrPC 125)? or section 18 of Hindu Adoption and Marraiges Act or section 24 of Hindu Marriage Act. Now that its been over 60 years of being independant, some might be curious to know whether or not women really got uplifted, are they now able to make a living? or else what are they doing? Fortunately, National Crime Records Bureau came up with the answers. (http://ncrb.nic.in/ADSI2007/Suicides07.pdf). Why am I linking women empowerment with suicides? Lets take a look at the NCRB report which says
"' Family Problems' and 'Illness', accounting for 23.8% and 22.3% respectively, were the major causes of suicides among the specified
Now before you ask "so whats the big deal?" please read it together with -
The overall male:female ratio of suicide victims for the year 2007 was 65:35

As we all know men wont bother to express their grievance as society will humiliate him, the weak among them will choose the easiest escape.

They dont even bother to write a suicide note; just end the life in those various ways mentioned in the report. In which category you can put a man who end his life drinking excessive alchohol or those who havent ever told their problems to anyone? How many "Devdas" you personally know who are killing themselves? But the status given by the society to a 'drunkard' is pretty close to a 'rapist'. Very few drink for fun, what about others the heavy drinkers? no one bothers!

And thats the most threatening of all those categories Causes not known, Other causes 41.6% and here also men have significant lead.

Men Women
Causes not known 13879 6530
Other causes 12085 5568

Now the questions are why that many married men are committing suicide? Who is creating those family problems? What their problems are?

Just read one suicide note and you will stop asking questions (It was originally written in Marathi which is available at http://supari.org/vithaal-dodke/ and is translated here for your reference) Suicide committed on 31-10-08 at 5:35 PM.
There are actually two suicide notes, one with police & other with family of the deceased. Family fears the police will destroy the second suicide note they have.

Accused Wife: Saroj Vitthal Todke.

She used to threaten me to implicate whole family even children to
be send to jail. My wife was demanding my land in her name. Ashok
nathuji shirsagar: brother-in-law
Deepak nathuji shirsagar: brother-in-law
prakash nathuji shirsagar: Brother-in-law
saasu Ji
Ramkrishna rao pimpalkar: close relative - came to my office and
threatened that you are now in our trap by marrying in this house
and you have to do what saroj is asking.
Deepak's wife saudevyani said, this house is ours and we are its
owners now. Brother in laws were also threatening me like same.
Wife used to say, i reject this house after seeing your family and
you are not my husband. You give me your house that's why i am
doing this drama, and used to threat for his brother.
Brothers used to instigate her on phone. My salary is also less
but i have decided to live separately from my brothers, even then
i am being tortured. Because of torture of my wife i am committing
suicide. I wish my dead body, not to be touched by my wife.
Vitthal todke."

Apparently, this report proves, those provisions given to women doesnt even uplift the self-esteem of women but instead they want to amend the Constitution and include those provisions in Fundamental Rights!!! No where in The Constitution has given the right to the State to make laws for any particular gender. But it is a shame that neither the State nor the Judiciary respect The Constitution by creating gender baised laws and declaring verdicts which clearly violates Article 14 of The Constitution of India.

The moral of the story is if you keep doing a favour for many years that will become a legal obligation!!! I'm wondering how come it is a legal responsibility of husband to take care of wife financially? Even if we include wives under unemployed category as the case may be, isnt it the responsiblity of the State to support the unemployed? Isnt it high time to establish fundamental rights?

Men’s Rights – Perspiration or Inspiration?

As I think about the today's theme - it reminds me of Thomas Edison, the man who invented the electric bulb. He had made a famous statement "Things are 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration"

Same applies to men's rights movement as well. It is a matter of constant awareness campaign and hitting at our opponents and proponents of male abuse. Contrary to popular belief, it is 3 times easier to abuse a male than a female because males have no support structure and male abuse is accepted by the society as social service.

Follow Yourself; Not Tradition

As I have repeatedly mentioned in my articles that cultures have deceived men, acting as vultures. Men have been used as the FREE ATM MACHINE, the UNPAID BODYGUARD, the de-facto PROTECTOR and PROVIDER, etc. by cultures and in the process have been reduced to disposable entities. Their abuse is considered a social service now.

And men, the way they are, are in a great way responsible for this. They rarely challenge or question conventions, traditions, histrionics and stereotypes thrust upon them. They do not feel the need to fight for their rights - only a handful of them are doing though scores are getting victimized. They do not demand for their space in the society and accept things as offered to them.

To this effect, today I take the example of Skandagupta - the great emperor of India. His stepmother has him sent to Ujjain so that her son can be made the emperor. He obeys her. But then the Huns attack India under the leadership of Attila the Hun. The army of Skandagupta calls him back as they needed his expertise.
